About Holroyd
Holroyd is a charming suburb located in western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Situated within the Cumberland Council's jurisdiction, Holroyd is approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) west of the Sydney central business district. The suburb derives its name from Arthur Holroyd, a respected local landowner, businessman, and the first Mayor of the area. The administrative center is situated nearby in Merrylands.
Holroyd shares the postcode 2142 with neighboring suburbs such as Granville, South Granville, Camellia, and Rosehill.
The suburb of Holroyd was officially established in 1999 when the New South Wales Geographical Names Board sought to define suburb boundaries. As there was no existing suburb named Holroyd within the Holroyd Council Local Government Area, one was created to fulfill the State Government requirements outlined by the Geographical Names Board. The boundaries of the suburb of Holroyd were initially designated as Walpole Street (north), Neil Street (south), the railway line (east), and Pitt Street (west). In 2001, the northern boundary was extended to the freeway, resulting in a modification of the boundary.
The historically significant sites of Goodlet and Smith Brickpits have been transformed into Holroyd Gardens Park, situated on the site of a clay pit that was later filled. Another notable feature is the Holroyd Gardens Estate, a medium-density development that incorporates the remaining heritage brick kilns and associated buildings.
According to the 2016 census, Holroyd had a population of 1,275 residents. Of the population, 35.7% were born in Australia, while India accounted for the next highest proportion of residents at 9.0%. The most commonly spoken language at home was English (27.3%), followed by Arabic (8.3%). The dominant religions among residents were Islam (27.2%), Catholicism (18.4%), No Religion (18.0%), and Hinduism (10.2%).
